KellyAnn Romanych (she/her)<p>Offering up a smallish thread on 2024 cool season planting in urban <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone10</span></a></p><p>First, the season has been rough in terms of hotter than normal days and nights, as well as bad air quality. </p><p>This season's focus is to expand being a neighborhood insectary and to generate more native plant seeds. </p><p>Because of the challenges with the weather, the pics are quick. I hope they're useful.</p><p>2024 planting is resistance for 2025 hope. </p><p>🧵🌱</p>

Soft clucking implies approval of the masking, seeding, and planting. It’s hard to understand being too hot in December in growing zone 10. However it is too hot. We will watch this space for more information on the recent plantings. <a href="https://epicure.social/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a>, <a href="https://epicure.social/tags/zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone10</span></a>, <a href="https://epicure.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a>.</p>
KellyAnn Romanych (she/her)<p>Broadforking bed for cool season planting. We've been so far above average, I'm direct seeding in December. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone10</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a></p>
KellyAnn Romanych (she/her)<p>Today was 75F, which sounds lovely, except it's over 10 degrees above average. Heading to 80F tomorrow. Winter solstice in 4 days. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/climateDiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>climateDiary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone10</span></a></p>
KellyAnn Romanych (she/her)<p>Today will be +15F above average, and the yarrow still blooming. This bed has supported hoverflies, native and honey bees, butterflies, and mantis. Every flowerhead is filled with seeds. Yarrow is a great starter plant to rewild areas. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NativePlants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NativePlants</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone10</span></a></p>
KellyAnn Romanych (she/her)<p>this morning, a Dielis wasp was caught in shade cloth protecting a bed. we both stayed calm. with a bit of careful cloth wrangling, she flew off before the heat got worse. she helps keep any beetle populations in check. we'll be around 105F today. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone10</span></a></p>
KellyAnn Romanych (she/her)<p>The strategy now is to support the pumpkin flowers for as long as the vines push them out in heatwave. </p><p>These squash family flowers are the sole source of nectar and pollen for the Peponapis bees. Unlike other bees that are generalists who can find opportunities with other flower families. The bees make colonies nearby, so this week is about keeping them &amp; next gen supported. </p><p>8 am PST <br>80F <br>43% humidity for our dry SGV clime<br>108F projected high </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ClimateDiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateDiary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bees</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zone10</span></a></p>
KellyAnn Romanych (she/her)<p>Anyone else having trouble with cucumbers &amp; pumpkins? I've got loads of male flowers and bees. Water and mulch is okay. Not many female blooms and none that have set. We're urban, 90+ and high UV daytime for weeks, variable air quality. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/zone10" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone10</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a></p>
