MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History March 22, 1943: The Nazi-affiliated Schutzmannschaft Battalion burnt alive everyone from the village of Khatyn, Belarus, near Minsk. They did it in retaliation for an attack on German troops by Soviet partisans. Himmler created Schutzmannschaft police units in 1941. By 1942, they had over 300,000 members. They slaughtered Jews throughout the Baltics, Ukraine and Belarus. They also served as guards at forced labor camps. In total, Nazis and Nazi collaborators slaughtered over 2 million people just in Belarus during the three years of Nazi occupation. This was nearly 25% of the entire population. Of these, 800,000 were Jews, or about 90% of the Jewish population. </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nazis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nazis</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/genocide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genocide</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/holocaust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>holocaust</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/antisemitism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>antisemitism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/jewish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jewish</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/khatyn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>khatyn</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/belarus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>belarus</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/himmler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>himmler</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/police" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>police</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>soviet</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/minsk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>minsk</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/belarus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>belarus</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History March 1, 1921: Anarchist and leftwing communist soldiers, sailors and civilians rose up against the Russian Bolsheviks in the Kronstadt uprising. The rebellion, which lasted until March 16, was the last major revolt against the Bolsheviks. It began when they sent delegates to Petrograd in solidarity with strikes going on in that city, and demanded the restoration of civil rights for workers, economic and political freedom for workers and peasants, including free speech, and that soviet councils include anarchists and left socialists. The Bolshevik forces, directed by Trotsky, killed over 1,000 Kronstadt rebels in battle, and executed another 2,100 in the aftermath. As many as 1,400 government troops died in their attempt to quash the rebellion. </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ussr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ussr</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>soviet</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kronstadt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kronstadt</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/rebellion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rebellion</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/uprising" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uprising</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/revolt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolt</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slaughter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slaughter</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/massacre" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>massacre</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/bolshevik" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bolshevik</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/freespeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>freespeech</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/solidarity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>solidarity</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/strike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>strike</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in labor History January 17, 1961: Patrice Lumumba, anti-colonial fighter and former premier of the newly independent Republic of the Congo, was assassinated with the complicity of the CIA. President Eisenhower authorized an assassination in 1960, because of Lumumba’s ties with the Soviet Union. CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb planned to kill him with poisoned toothpaste. Gottlieb was the main scientist behind the CIA’s MKUltra program, which did illegal human mind control experiments using drugs, like LSD, without the victim’s knowledge or consent. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History January 16, 1969: Jan Palach committed suicide by self-immolation in Prague, Czechoslovakia to protest the Soviet invasion that ended the Prague Spring. Prior to his political suicide, he sent a letter to several public figures demanding an end to censorship and an end to the Soviet propaganda paper, as well as a call for a General Strike to meet these demands. His funeral turned into a major protest against the occupation. Several others also committed self-immolation in the coming months. </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/czech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>czech</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prague" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prague</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>soviet</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/occupation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>occupation</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ussr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ussr</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/invasion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>invasion</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/suicide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>suicide</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/generalstrike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>generalstrike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/JanPalach" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JanPalach</span></a></p>

Ocēlōtl cehuetzilizpan ❄️<p>Here’s one more. This is a black-and-white photo from below of a Soviet MiG-19PM carrying four guided ‘beam-riding’ RS-2U air-to-air missiles. Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar<p>Soviet phone socket. Seems to contain a lightbulb?! And two 1A fuses.</p><p>No tone, but it's not disconnected, something pulses a ~40V spike every now and then.</p><p>The fuses connect each input wire to the residential outlet. The lightbulb doesn't seem to be connected to anything, but has those two screws to connect it across the copper pair, presumably for testing purposes. Those 40V spikes would make it flash. It's normally under an opaque cover.</p><p>Interesting.</p><p><a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Soviet</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/POTS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>POTS</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Telephony" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Telephony</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Socket" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Socket</span></a></p>
Tim Mak<p>In the Moldovan village of Corjova, disappearances began even before the <a href="https://journa.host/tags/Soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Soviet</span></a> Union's collapse. </p><p>Some victims were discovered at the bottom of a well, while others vanished on their way to work, never to return.</p>
Tim Mak<p>In the late 70s and early 80s, drinking was a big part of the culture in many <a href="https://journa.host/tags/Soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Soviet</span></a> countries. This came with problems: it brought chaos to the workplace, it increased health problems, and ultimately shaped a negative image of the <a href="https://journa.host/tags/USSR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USSR</span></a> globally.</p>
Tim Mak<p>Such clandestine “laboratories” are quite common in Ukraine, and were even more widespread in the <a href="https://journa.host/tags/Soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Soviet</span></a> era. </p><p>The legacy of brewing moonshine offers a unique perspective on how social behavior adapts to <a href="https://journa.host/tags/authoritarian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>authoritarian</span></a> control, a compelling study of both resilience and rebellion.</p>
