Becca is an amazing coach, she's been there, she knows what she's talking about. She also uses Strengths to help her clients.

Definitely worth a read.

#WritingCommunity

What's your favourite book about writing, or your other craft?

"The Mind's Eye" is a compilation of Henri Cartier-Bresson's writings about photography. I go back to it to read my favorite quote:

"To take photographs means to recognize - simultaneously and within a fraction of a second - both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one's head, one's eye, and one's heart on the same axis."

That quote is so important to me that I have the words "la tête, l'œil, le cœur" tattooed on my arm below a camera aperture.

I've got more reference documentation than I know what to do with and there's a copy of the Machinery Handbook floating around here somewhere, for what limited utility it provides a non-machinist.

Just about the only book I've read that was on theory was Will Storr's The Science of Storytelling, which was... good. A swim in a pond in the rain - in which four Russians give a master class on writing, reading, and life.

It uses short stories to deconstruct why we sense the things we do within each of them, in terms of form, structure, information and other elements. Pretty helpful imho.

GaH Learner
17. What's your favourite book about writing, or your other craft?

I don't realy have a favourite, they all are helpful one way or another. I like the emotional thesaurus, books on crochet and knitting, and enjoy Steering the Craft by Ursula Le Guin. But when I have something I need 'right now' - I search for it on the web. Power Thesaurus, dict.cc, drops design, Lion brand... these are my go-to websites for writing or getting free patterns.

#ScribesAndMakers #GL325

What's your favourite book about writing, or your other craft?

It's hard to say. I've read a lot of books on writing at different times and they have relevant and instructive parts and parts that are either outdated or unhelpful. Writing advice for one person isn't necessarily usable by everyone else. I liked Bird by Bird by Anne Lamont because my main take away was just to be kind to yourself while writing and don't put extra stress on yourself.

Walter Thinman
17 Books about craft 2/2

I responded from memory, then searched & found the titles. The first was Becoming A Writer by Dorothea Brande; I'm not sure if 1981 counts as 'a very long time ago.' The second was The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron. One I didn't think of that I did read was Eats, Shoots, & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynn Truss. I didn't think of it as a book about writing, but it's on the lists.

#ScribesAndMakers

Walter Thinman
17 What's your favourite book about writing, or your other craft?
I've never made it all the way through one. One I seem to remember had a pink and white patterned cover, was written a very long time ago, and wanted me to be a disciplined writer. Another I think I saw a friend talk about and decided to give it a try. There was something about following God, and if you don't believe in God, think of it as Good Orderly Direction. I tried a couple of exercises but didn't get far.
#ScribesAndMakers

I often use phrases like "After normal greets were finished." It would be time-consuming and repetitive to include standard set phrases unless relevant, especially since they are culturally alien to my primary audience.
