ScienceCommunicator<p>The memory of making a decision, or having a belief, one way or another, typically, biases our thinking towards believing in it (especially when our social status, being part of a social group, depends on our beliefs). And, afterwards (ever after?), being biased towards seeking the information that confirms that belief.</p><p>Generally, folk get into sub-optimal ways of thinking, doing, believing (routines)</p><p>Especially, when they don't question their norms</p><p><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/187079343-the-cognitive-biases-compendium" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">goodreads.com/book/show/187079</span><span class="invisible">343-the-cognitive-biases-compendium</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a></p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] You wouldn't get a character like Arokh being a good guy with a major role in a modern game, as he looks too "demonic" in this Abrahamic climate. So, was the '90s more diverse in this regard? Big yes. And that leads us to an even better question! Which is: Were old games happier with being weird? Honestly, I could say "Go play Vangers, Ecco the Dolphin, and Haunting — Starring Polterguy and you tell me!" and leave it at that, but let's dig deeper.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p><p>-13</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] DEI is great, but too often you'll have a black genderqueer character written by a straight, white person and sometimes voiced by a straight, white person. And by not having people writing about their own identity, culture, and experiences it can come off as superficial and shallow. I mean, more Japanese people lending their voices to Assassin's Creed: Shadows would've avoided cultural indignities that upset actual Japanese people.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p><p>-6</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] This brings us cleanly to the real question: "Were older games more diverse?" There are a lot of angles to consider! Firstly, wers older games more inclusive? Eh. I mean, they weren't less inclusive, and there certainly wasn't as much of a fear of women or minorities, back then it wasn't uncommon to see them leading dev teams. DEI has actually been really great, but it doesn't always work out the way it should. Which is disappointing.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p><p>-5</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] So why is there even a discussion about old games being "better?" Well, I want to refer back to where I conveyed the idea of a game giving someone something. If an old game does that where a newer game fails to, then that makes the older game "better" for that person. It's pointless to fixate on subjectivity, but there is worth in examining what's being granted to one who'd find older games "better." What did they offer? What's the difference?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p><p>-4</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] This legwork is important to compartmentalise "better" as a useless descriptor that's just going to trigger people. It's like saying "You should like what I do because I'm superior!" and I'm not nearly enough of an authoritarian dipshit to make that claim. On the other hand, you're entitled to call a gmwe shitty for problematic elements, or for really hurting you. That's not the same territory as subjective taste, which is what we're considering.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p><p>-3</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] I mean, speaking for myself? A game with friendly dragons is going to be "better" for me than one where they're slain by unga-bungan dimwits. You can't really argue that because it's reliant on what I enjoy. I love Neurodiver as it's a futuristic setting with a silver lining of hope that embraced weird, where the lefty kids are winning. I prefer it over Cyberpunk 2077. I think Neurodiver is "better" than 2077, as the latter gives me nothing I want.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p><p>-2</p>
Weary Wulf<p>[P] I've been thinking about a question that's been knocking around in my head for a bit, now. Some ask: "Are old games better?" But I think this is the wrong question. It might even be intentionally misleading as one can't objectively quantify "better." Everyone has their own tastes. If someone really loves a game because it gives them something others don't? They can say that game is "better" to them, and that's inarguable because it's subjective.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/videogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videogames</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a></p><p>-1</p>
