Moved to https://mk.absturztau.be/@Linux
Someone really should start another not self-hosted, non-US-based, Password Manager. I only know of two:

1) Heylogin
2) pCloud

(1Password, is owned by a Canadian company, owned by a US company).

1) Heylogin - Sucks.

It is completely tired to your phone. Using their web browser extension? Check your phone. Want to log in to a site? Check your phone. Want to update a login details? Check your phone.

You ever lose or damage your phone, you're f-cked. It is not designed for multiple devices either.

2) pCloud

It is indeed outside US-jurisdiction. The company is not owned by any business in the USA. It does not own any businesses itself in the USA. But they do resell services in the USA, and the only way you can avoid not being assigned to one of those US Servers is to use a VPN so you'll be forwarded to their Europe Servers.

From their own documentation:

" As a consequence API calls have to be made to the correct API host name depending were the user has been registered – api.pcloud.com for United States and eapi.pcloud.com for Europe. Moved to https://mk.absturztau.be/@Linux
I found two (2) password managers outside US-jurisdiction.

Neither am I completely satisfied with, because both of them are suspect, not in the terms of security, but whether you end up using a non-US based server with a non-US based company.

What do I mean?

1st, both companies are not directly Us-based. That's the good news. They also do not own any servers in the USA either, more good news.

1) 1Password, located in Canada, North America

2) pCloud, based out of Switzerland, operated out of Bulgaria, Europe. Despite their TOS, presume, Bulgaria https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCloud

But as I said, that's the good news, they're not US-based.

However, in the case of 1Password, they're owned by, AgileBits Inc, which again, still Canada. But their primary investor (shareholder) is Accel, formerly known as Accel Partners, is a global venture capital firm, located in California, USA.

For some people, that's not going to matter, because they do not directly own the company. But they do have the majority of shares, and that means a US-based company can indeed influence the Canadian company.

If that does not matte to you, that's fine, provided you use a VPN to sign up, and are sure you use 1Password Dot CA or EU, because otherwise you're likely to be hosted on their US-base servers. They do not own US-servers, but they do lease a few.

Which brings me to pCloud.

Also, you want to use a VPN, because their own documentation notes they assign you also to the server, depending on where you signed up from. I suggest using their pcloud DOT com/de/eu website. Else, you could end up on their US-based servers.

You can see a copy of the documentation here: https://docs.pcloud.com

pCloud also has 1 other thing I find concerning. Alongside their monthly and yearly plans (they also offer a free plan to try them), they offer a "lifetime plan". Lifetime plans are often "cash grabs" because no corporation is really going to offer their services for an unlimited time, forever, with 1 small fee. pCloud has been around since 2014 (11 years), but if one day they grandfather this plan, or change names, or are bought by another company, I will not be surprised. I do not suggest you sign up using a "lifetime" plan.

These two companies (1Password and pCloud) are NOT a recommendation, and I am NOT going to put either on my list of recommended providers. But this is an option that may work for some of you. The goal was to find a provider that is not US-based and did not require you to host or manage your own services. This technically fits that requirement, but I am STILL looking for alternatives.

#PasswordManager #Password #BitWarden #ProtonPass

RE: https://misskey.de/notes/a3yyif5si0
