Stefano Marinelli<p>One of the things I've been advocating for years - and where I want to raise my voice even louder - is the importance of owning your data. <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a></p><p>Over the past few days, I’ve come across two examples of how misinformation is causing immense damage, leading people to believe that there's no alternative but to hand over their data to big corporations, putting themselves entirely in their hands.</p><p>- A well-known lawyer, just before a meeting, warned about using Teams and its new "virtual assistant," which joins conferences before anyone else and transcribes everything. When I pointed out that it would be wise to use alternative tools (like Jitsi, for example, but there are others), he abruptly ended the conversation, saying, "We've lost this war. There's no alternative anymore."<br>That wasn’t the right moment for a detailed discussion, so I just noted that alternatives do exist - but if no one starts using them, and if we passively accept certain behaviors from certain companies, things will never improve for us.</p><p>- Just now, I received another one of those emails that hurt more in the heart than in the wallet: "Our e-commerce is taking off, so we’re moving it to Shopify to better manage our growth."<br>I replied, trying to explain that handing over a growing e-commerce business to a third-party company (right now, they have full access to their own server - meaning all their databases, data, etc., are under their control) means losing ownership of it. Prices could change at any moment, contract terms could shift negatively, and, worst case scenario, if Shopify itself faced issues (which seems impossible today, but think of giants like Kodak), they could lose everything. Of course, they’ll do what they think is best, but I feel obligated to warn them.</p><p>Luckily, others are making the opposite choice. But I keep wondering: since these big platforms aren’t exactly cheap, rather than "selling themselves" to them just for (potentially) fewer headaches, wouldn’t it be worth paying someone (not me, of course, but someone working exclusively for them) to handle these things - ensuring they retain full ownership of their business and their data?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/DataOwnership" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataOwnership</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Decentralization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Decentralization</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BigTech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BigTech</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/DataRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DataRights</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/MyDataMyChoice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MyDataMyChoice</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/TakeBackControl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TakeBackControl</span></a></p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>This morning has been quite packed. Almost all of it was dedicated to sending a project and a very competitive financial proposal (I hope the client realizes just how advantageous it is) to create something that's very close to my heart. Now comes the waiting phase, filled with anticipation. Not for the money, but for the joy of doing what I love and helping them work even better, with ownership of their own data, using solutions I believe in and that are truly effective. <br>Fingers crossed!</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a></p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>I haven't spoken about BSDMail in a while, but it's not abandoned. It's just that I've been busy with other more urgent matters. </p><p>However, in the last few days, I’ve received two separate requests (due in part to current geopolitical events) for moving email from big players to a self-hosted setup. This is exactly why, in the coming days, I will be sending two proposals to clients, both based on the platform developed for BSDMail. In both cases, the number of email accounts exceeds 150, and in one of them, there are many more. </p><p>It would be great to move forward with these setups (where the quotes will be very competitive), and hopefully, this will encourage other related organizations to do the same.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDMail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSDMail</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a></p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>UPDATE: I haven't seen Recall in action there. I was just asking the doctor how they'll deal with it.</p><p>This morning, I went to the doctor for a scheduled appointment. While she was looking at the results of blood tests from two years ago on the screen (and suggested repeating them for a follow-up), I realized she was using Windows 11. A detail came to mind. The doctor is extremely polite and friendly, so I asked her, "How do you handle the feature called Recall?" The doctor was taken aback and had no idea what I was talking about. I was about to drop the conversation, but she, being a serious professional, immediately called the technicians who manage their PCs to ask for clarification. They downplayed it, saying it's not an issue and that it's a feature "on all PCs, so we can't do anything about it." She started to express that she didn’t like it and wanted it deactivated. No luck: they won’t proceed because, according to them, even deactivating it is "a hack that could compromise future updates." She’s furious and will talk to her colleagues and the decision-makers. She wants secure systems because "there’s patient data involved."</p><p>In reality, patient data is stored on servers (which I haven't investigated), but everything that appears on the screen is, in my opinion, at risk. </p><p>I’ve offered to help them find a solution—because, if I'm right, all they need is LibreOffice and a browser. In that case, I’ll suggest one of the *BSD or Linux systems and do it for free. </p><p>I don’t want to make money off my doctor. I just want patient data to be (sufficiently) secure.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Recall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Recall</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Windows</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Security" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Security</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/RunBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RunBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a></p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>Dear friends of the BSD Cafe,</p><p>As 2024 comes to an end, it’s time to reflect on what we’ve built together during the first full year of life for BSD Cafe. Launched on 20 July 2023, this project has grown far beyond what I could have imagined. While I haven’t tracked full uptime data, I can confidently say that the downtime was less than 30 minutes overall - even though the main VM hosting our services moved multiple times (including a switch from a Proxmox hypervisor to bhyve on FreeBSD, for the sake of alignment with our mission). In a world filled with over-engineered HA systems, we’ve outperformed many “big-name” cloud providers. Not bad for a community project, right?</p><p>For me, this has been an incredible journey. The users here are not just participants - they’re collaborators, and their positivity has been inspiring. The content shared and created at BSD Cafe has been valuable not only to the BSD community but beyond. What truly sets BSD Cafe apart is the openness for dialogue and exchange. Whether it’s social media posts, Matrix discussions, repositories in our brew, or RSS feeds, people seem to genuinely appreciate what we create and the conversations we foster.</p><p>BSD Cafe is a journey - one that grows, evolves, and continues. Our goal isn’t endless growth (we’re a community, not a business) but rather to maintain a welcoming, inclusive space where everyone feels a sense of positivity and belonging. For me, opening any service with “bsd.cafe” in the domain brings joy and pride. That’s the spirit I’ve tried to convey, and I hope it resonates with all of you, whether you’re active BSD Cafe users or friends of the community.</p><p>Promoting self-hosting and <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a> has, as a side effect, inspired some users to “go solo” with their own setups. But even then, they remain part of BSD Cafe - in spirit, in purpose, and in connection.</p><p>Here’s a look at what we’ve achieved together this year:</p><p>- mastodon.bsd.cafe: 370 total users <br> Active in the past month: 207 <br> Active in the past six months: 286<br>- snac.bsd.cafe: 14 total users <br> Active in the past month: 7<br>- blendit.bsd.cafe: 61 registered users<br>- matrix.bsd.cafe: 23 users<br>- brew.bsd.cafe: 29 users - 80 repositories<br>- freshrss.bsd.cafe: 25 users<br>- miniflux.bsd.cafe: 11 users<br>- press.bsd.cafe: 9 users<br>- myip.bsd.cafe: Constantly used by various users<br>- wiki.bsd.cafe: Could use a bit more love and content, but it fulfills its role as a functional homepage.<br>- tube.bsd.cafe: Still in testing - Peertube 7.0 update is on the way.</p><p>For detailed stats from our reverse proxy and general router (excluding media services, which generate most traffic but are handled via caching reverse proxies), you can check here - updated hourly: <a href="https://netstats.bsd.cafe" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">netstats.bsd.cafe</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>The journey of BSD Cafe continues, and I look forward to seeing where 2025 will take us. Together, we’ve built something special - something driven by passion, shared purpose, and a little bit of the BSD magic that makes all of this possible.</p><p>Here’s to a new year full of joy, serenity, and connection. Thank you for being part of this adventure.</p><p>Wishing you all a fantastic 2025 - and THANK YOU! <br>Stefano</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDCafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDCafeServices" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafeServices</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDCafeAnnouncements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafeAnnouncements</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSDCafeUpdates" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSDCafeUpdates</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/HappyNewYear" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HappyNewYear</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Snac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/snac2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>snac2</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/lemmy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lemmy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/matrix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>matrix</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/dokuwiki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dokuwiki</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/freshrss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>freshrss</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/miniflux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>miniflux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/wallabag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wallabag</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/peertube" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>peertube</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/FreeBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/NetBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NetBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/RunBSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RunBSD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BSD</span></a></p>
Stefano Marinelli<p>In 2021, I sent an email saying that, given the situation, I would not be able to keep your machines running with the current infrastructure. You replied that the funds are allocated "for migration to a cloud-based solution," so the machines must be kept running as they are. I strongly suggest you reconsider: your connections are unstable and slow, it would be impossible to work (via Remote Desktop, Windows servers) in such conditions - from over 30 thin clients. You responded that the budget is now allocated for this, and that the consultant assured you everything would be perfect. </p><p>The migration will never happen – after spending tens of thousands of euros – due to "lack of connection quality." </p><p>I "forgive" you.</p><p>At the beginning of 2023, I wrote to you that there are two critical issues that will soon compromise the security and reliability of the machines. You replied that you are "working on the plan for migration to a centralized solution in one of your locations." I responded that the connectivity is inadequate, that that location has data center flooding issues (it should at least be moved to an upper floor), and that, in case of problems, all your 9 locations would be down because of it. Therefore, given the situation, it would be better to keep a server and a replica at each site, with offsite backups, ensuring they are current and consistent. </p><p>Minimal financial investment, maximum uptime. </p><p>You replied that "the defined path is now set, so we are proceeding with it" because a "consultant has guaranteed maximum reliability." </p><p>I withdrew, predicting disasters and for the same reason: they present themselves elegantly, with glossy catalogs and buzzwords – they sure seem credible and modern! </p><p>Go ahead, it’s your money and your data.</p><p>This morning at 5:30, you woke up me because your location had electrical issues, and the other branches are facing external connectivity problems due to the (same) Internet provider (and the backup, which uses the same channels as the primary provider, unlike what the vendors had promised). </p><p>A downtime of at least 3 days is expected. </p><p>Everything is down. You want me to take the backups (made by others, I don't even know how), and restore the old servers in the branches (from 2015), as you believe it would be possible to resume work only this way – as suggested by the "elegant consultant."</p><p>I replied that I wish you good luck and went back to sleep with a clear conscience.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/DisasterRecovery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DisasterRecovery</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SysAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/KISS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KISS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/KeepItSimpleAndStupid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KeepItSimpleAndStupid</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/NewWeekNewTroubles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewWeekNewTroubles</span></a></p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>In my opinion, every government, public entity, association, foundation, etc., that needs to communicate with the public should have its own communication channel, with full control over its data and the messages it delivers. When I read “my Discord server,” I feel like responding “there’s nothing ‘yours’ about it - tomorrow morning they could shut everything down, and you would have lost EVERYTHING.”. Own your data!</p><p>Sometimes, I read that instances are not opened because of “costs not balanced by the number of users.” But even public television channels are often economically unprofitable, yet they are considered an essential service for public communication. Open, decentralized technologies that ensure control over one’s data should be treated the same way.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OpenData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenData</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/CommunicationFreedom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CommunicationFreedom</span></a></p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>This morning, I took my wife to the hospital for routine blood tests that had been scheduled for some time. Everything was going smoothly: check-in, number, waiting room. Suddenly, everything came to a halt and shut down. I was connected to the hospital’s public Wi-Fi and noticed that my connection also went down.</p><p>Having managed a couple of similar facilities, I immediately understood what had happened. I saw the staff panicking and calling the technicians, but they quickly reorganized within 10 minutes. They managed to process everyone who already had a number and then proceeded with the others in the order of their arrival. Despite the ten-minute delay (even though people started complaining right away), they were extremely efficient.</p><p>I later confirmed that the entire booking, check-in, and queue system is “in the cloud.” The hospital experienced a connectivity interruption, and all related services stopped. The staff no longer had access to anything, so a technician sent the lists to a manager via another channel, and everything resumed manually.</p><p>For years, I’ve insisted that certain things MUST be local. The healthcare facilities I manage have all the necessary systems for the operation of the facility internally, including patient records. External services like websites, emails, etc., are secondary.</p><p>Everything essential must always be accessible locally and, in special cases, it should be possible to physically access the servers and connect directly to them, bypassing any network/switch failures.</p><p>There has been only one interruption in the past, due to human error. Today, we have redundant servers (not HA on virtualizers, but two machines running the same software with replicated databases - on separate power lines) so such an issue shouldn’t happen anymore.</p><p>Not everything can be anticipated, but history is a great teacher. The Internet connection will eventually be interrupted :-)</p><p>When it comes to the health and survival of people, there are no compromises.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Internet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Internet</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Networking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Networking</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Outage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Outage</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Health" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Health</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/HA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HA</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Cloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cloud</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/CloudComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CloudComputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OwnYourData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OwnYourData</span></a></p>
