The highly suggestive, perhaps even erotic, center of an impatiens flower. And that's coming from a gay man.

My technique and general philosophy of flower photography consists of the following steps.

Step 1:
Aim for the sexy bits

That is all the steps.

Extreme closeup photograph of the center of a white impatiens flower. This variety has white petals covered in tiny reflective patches that give the surface a shimmering appearance with the right light angle. The center is not unlike a woman's labia and vaginal opening with white fused stamens whose white, almost transparent anthers appear like labia surrounding the entrance to the nectar which resembles the vaginal opening.

Favorite photo from Chicago a few yrs ago. Had recently purchased a Nikon 40mm macro lens which is also an excellent street lens. This trip I decided to restrict myself to the the 40mm only. It was a great challenge and I learned a lot.

I was not able to ID the flower but based on its shaped it's likely in the Ranunculus family. The flowers are at the end of stalks that droop under the flower's weight. Each flower has five light purple pointed petals that radiate from a center filled with white stamens with yellow anthers.

The joy of photography is having infinite subjects. The tragedy of photography is not having enough time to photograph them all. This is from two yrs ago. Definitely need make some time to look for more jumping spider's in my garden this year.

Extreme closeup photograph of a bright mustard-yellow lichen on the side of a tree. The lichen is made up of curvy, frilly plates or plaques that hug the tree's surface as well as reproductive structures that appear as raised silvery-gray rings with dark concave centers.

Spiral galaxy 278O (the "o" is for ouchies) in the constellation Gemini.

Closeup photograph of the top of a cactus plant (possibly M. geminispina). The cactus has a spiral pattern that begins at the top of the plant and continues down the plant's side consisting of alternating green and white stripes that circle the plant. The green stripes are exposed green flesh while the white stripes are made up fuzzy white hairs. Amber cactus spines project from evenly spaced locations along each green spiral except at the very top where the cluster together and project toward the top center.

Anther-hugger.

Extreme closeup photograph of a bee (possibly either a leafcutter bee species or a sweat bee species, ID apps were inconclusive) hugging an orange pollen-covered anther of large Asiatic lily. This lily variety has hot pink petals with black spots near the center where they surround six hot pink stamens with orange anthers and a hot pink to red pistil. The bee is facing away from the camera and has its legs wrapped around the anther nearest to the camera. This bee species has similar features to honeybees with a yellow and black striped abdomen, a dark thorax and head covered in fine brown and yellow hairs, two antennae, three simple eyes on the forehead, and two compound eyes facing forward, six legs, and transparent amber wings with dark veining.

A little leaf-cutter on zinnia to warm things up?

My Schlumbergera has gifted me another blooming yr so time for an annual portrait.

Went a bit bokeh-fied (f/3.5) this yr. Such wonderful 3-D shape and that magenta really heats up a room. I like my new pot 2.

Schlumbergera, sometimes called Holiday cactus, are a succulent and they have flat, segmented stems rather than leaves. The stems spread out from the main plant and new segments begin at the end of each stem. This variety has hot pink or magenta petals that fade to white and light pink near where the petal attaches to the flower center. Flowers begin as long, tight buds. They open into a flower with two rows of petals with one row telescoping from the other row in a tubular, oblong shape. Each row has around 10 petals. From the center of the flower extends long white stamens with yellow anthers and a long, magenta pistil with a magenta stigma.

Rudbeckia always zigs when you expect it to zag.

This variety of rudbeckia has long yellow and burnt orange petals that radiate and droop down from a central cone structure made up of dark brown florets with golden pollen. Often Rudbeckia petals are yellow with orange markings near the center but on this flower the orange is roughly 3/4ths of the petal's length with the final 1/4 a brilliant orange-yellow. One of the flower's petals on the right side is curved up and back and lies across the top of the petal next to it.

Drifting along with the cosmos.

Each flower has eight petals that radiate and form a shallow cup around a center filled with yellow and brown florets. This variety has wavy or creased petals that end in a frilly edge. The flower's stem is in shadow and out of focus so it appears as if the flower is unsupported.

Feel like a purple phlox kinda Monday morning.

Extreme closeup photograph of purple phlox flower with out of focus purple phlox flowers in the background. The flowers have five, teardrop-shaped petals that radiate from a long, conical center which extends down to a short stem. Yellow anthers are visible in the center of the cone while the other reproductive organs are interior to the cone.

Was a bit worried my Schlumbergera wasn't going to produce flowers this yr. While watering it yesterday I noticed new (& some older, ) buds that I didn't notice previously. This will be 4 yrs in a row for flowers so it seems as if it's still happy & thriving
