Robert Kingett<p>Had an instance where I was denied an Uber ride because of my white cane. Lyft too! I eventually had to use UZURV to get me home. For those not in the know, UZURV is an on demand ride share specifically designed for Disabled people and my city covers the costs of these rides via the Paratransit partnerships with UZURV. I had booked a ride to go from the library to my home. Each time, on each service, the driver pulled up just enough to see me, see my cane, then pull away. Both apps said my trips were canceled. I logged the incident and complained to both Uber and Lyft. I got ride credits from Lyft, which tells me they are well aware this is happening and have some internal mechanism to deal with things like this, which tells me they aren't doing enough. They are doing enough just to make the problem go away. Radio silence from Uber. Not every state has a Paratransit partnership with UZURV and I don't know about other countries, but I think UZURV is a United States only thing. These tech companies need to be held accountable. This has got to end, and not with just giving a user Lyft credits and told to essentially go away. <a href="https://caneandable.social/tags/Uber" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Uber</span></a> <a href="https://caneandable.social/tags/Lyft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lyft</span></a> <a href="https://caneandable.social/tags/RightToRide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RightToRide</span></a></p>

Flipboard Tech Desk<p>Last year, when Minnesota’s progressive politicians coalesced around a bill to raise the minimum pay for Uber and Lyft drivers in the state, Governer Tim Walz shocked many of his allies by vetoing it. Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸<p>Here's the letter I sent to Minister of Labour Harry Bains:<br>Dear Minister Bains,</p><p>I am a “Dasher”.</p><p>Today I am withdrawing my services from Door Dash in solidarity with other gig workers who are protesting the working conditions and unfair pay that the “gig economy” has been allowed to get away with.</p><p>I support BC’s efforts to regulate these companies and bring them in line with the expectations of any workplace.</p><p>For your information, I have included a message I received from Door Dash at exactly 11AM today, coinciding with the protests/withdrawal of service in this timezone, encouraging me to contact the BC Government. They did not allow me to personalize my message to you on their form. They wanted me to send their canned rhetoric that tries to make it sound like gig workers are on their side. They’re wrong.</p><p>Gig workers want fairness and respect and we are working, and withdrawing our service, in solidarity with each other.<br>Thank you for your efforts in supporting us.</p><p>Cheers<br>Chris</p><p> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Uber" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Uber</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Lyft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lyft</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/DoorDash" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DoorDash</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/SkipTheDishes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkipTheDishes</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/bcpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bcpoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/solidarity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>solidarity</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/workersrights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workersrights</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/minimumwage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>minimumwage</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/GigWork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GigWork</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/unions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>unions</span></a></p>
Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸<p>You might have heard Gig workers are taking time out of their day today to protest working conditions from companies like <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Uber" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Uber</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Lyft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lyft</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/DoorDash" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DoorDash</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/SkipTheDishes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkipTheDishes</span></a> and others.</p><p>Well, I just got this email from Door Dash at exactly 11AM PST when many people are doing this 'strike’.</p><p>The link goes to a form letter to the BC Government. But it's locked, you can't personalize it. I was going to remove all their text and say “I support regulating Gig work and improving working conditions”.</p><p>If you support workers rights, if you use these services, or if you're a gig worker yourself. Please contact your government in your area and urge them to follow the lead of others regulating gig work.</p><p>A statement read on the CBC this morning from Door Dash said they're not concerned.</p><p>Obviously.... they are.</p><p>Why? Because we're taking action together for fair wages and protection.</p><p>If you would like to send an actual letter to the BC Minister of Labour supporting Gig Workers in their fight for fair working conditions, send an email to LBR.Minister@gov.bc.ca</p><p>If you'd like a "form letter" (that you can modify!) I'll put what I wrote to Minister Bains in the next reply.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/bcpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bcpoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/solidarity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>solidarity</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/workersrights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workersrights</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/minimumwage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>minimumwage</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/GigWork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GigWork</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/unions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>unions</span></a></p>
