SiranaGerman language advice: Many long scary words are just several small words in a trench coat. It's like lego, you just have to know how to stack them. Mx Verdaunrleated but a friend asked how I pronounce the word "poem". MEMORY UNLOCKED. I was LIVID with a study workbook in Japan (so 6 to 10 y.o., which was 2nd or 3rd to 5th grade for me). Fucking thing dinged me for saying "fire" was TWO syllables. Because it IS! If "fire" was ONE syllable, it would be "Far", a different fuckign word. SiranaI am not in linguistics or historian, but as someone who speaks more than one language, occasionally I find myself thinking about words beyond "what means what".Words like "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" for example. I think it's very telling for past (and present) society how there are no age appropriate common terms for unmarried adults in a relationship (or gender neutral ones). Getting divorced and meeting someone new or never having been married to begin with but still dating as adult is not so uncommon anymore in many parts of the world. And yet there are not a lot substitutes to calling someone your "boyfriend" at an age of 50 or 10 years in a relationship.There is "partner" but this is a fairly broad term and can also apply to dance partner, business partner or any other kind of partnership in the wider sense of the meaning. I suppose "significant other" is the closest thing. What can I say? If your language features final consonant devoicing (German, Russian etc.), voicing final consonants in languages that don't exhibit this trait (English, French, Swedish, Ukrainian etc.) is one of the most difficult things to do for non-native speakers. It's even more surprising for me because, say, German has a [b] sound, but you'll almost never hear it at the end of English words like web, job, grab, — pronounced by Germans. The same goes for Russian speakers.

I have a PhD in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/linguistic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#linguistic</a> (historical corpus linguistics specifically!) and even though I now have an alt-ac job as a learning technologist I still enjoy chatting about it. Also into sci-fi, fantasy, Victorian literature, Shakespeare, and baby names (not even to name my own children, I’m just a namenerd who loves talking about names in general).
