My government is aggressively telling the world that people like me don't belong and should not be celebrated or even acknowledged. They are backing that up with policy changes, erasing us from history, and using language that paints us as deceitful predators.<br>I can't go back. You know, the happier cousin to the Day of Remembrance.<br>I'm a transgender woman who is almost 50. I started to transition around 35 years old. It wasn't until I was in my early 40s that I also realized I was bisexual / pansexual.<br>There was a whole lot of "I thought everybody felt that way" for both of those. Same for my ADHD and Autism which came after that.<br>I'm here.<br>I'm alive.<br>I'm doing all right.<br>Being transgender was never easy. We lack recognition in so many ways that make us popular targets. When you are out, you may be unable to get hired at a "normal" job and doxxing can get you fired or worse. Families feel no remorse for kicking you out. You are called a liar, a child groomer, and worse. You can be attacked or murdered and "trans panic" might let the perpetrator walk free.<br>It's easy to feel subhuman.<br>I'm old enough to remember when this was happening to homosexuality, but I wasn't part of it. I was too young and naive. Reagan was a real piece of shit and things got really bad.<br>I think they made it through by being seen, by showing the world they were just people, not monsters or aliens. Human beings just trying to live their lives authentically.<br>I'm hoping we can do the same.<br>Not just survive, but thrive.<br>It's the variety that makes humanity so beautiful.
