Tommie Mabry kept a diary on the walls of a building he'd broken into and catalogued the goings on after Katrina. The walls of that building were saved, the wall coverings removed, and the journal displayed in 4'x6' glass cases.

I remember being 12-13 and not understanding what was happening, why government didn't seem to be helping, etc... It broke me today as I looked at a hatchet and tried to explain to Bit(7F) and Byte(5F) how people had to chop their way out of their attics. It was a good opportunity to remind them to look for the helpers. Always.

I think they said it was 113 there at the time. We talked for a while about what it’s like to live in a city that hot. One of them said they had moved there from New Orleans after <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Katrina" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Katrina</a>. “I think I like to be in places where I can see it really happening.” At the end of the day I was writing something and I had to check how to spell the name of a river. It’s in a far away city I won’t ever visit because I think I’m done flying. I pulled up a map and there was a warning note on it saying the area was under travel restrictions.
