Peu de temps après la déclaration d'indépendance de Toussaint L'Ouverture et de Jean-Jacques Dessalines, des navires de guerre français sont descendus dans les eaux de Port-au-Prince et ont fait pression sur Haïti pour qu'il accepte de payer une énorme indemnité pour les biens français perdus pendant la révolution en échange de la reconnaissance de la souveraineté d'Haïti (étrange méthode pour obtenir la reconnaissance de la souveraineté, celle-là). Peu importe que les Haïtiens aient gagné la guerre.</p><p>Le monde des négociations fondées sur la race est en dents de scie. Les hommes blancs vaincus exigeaient des vainqueurs noirs qu'ils paient. Et les vainqueurs - ou du moins leur président, Jean-Pierre Boyer - ont accepté, engageant la jeune nation, âgée d'une vingtaine d'années seulement, à effectuer des paiements qui paralyseraient l'économie haïtienne pour le siècle à venir et qui s'élèvent à environ 21 milliards de dollars en dollars d'aujourd'hui.</p><p>Et quelle était cette dette d'Haïti envers la France et les anciens planteurs français esclavagistes ? Qu'est-ce que les Haïtiens avaient exactement pris à la patrie ? Les planteurs ont fait valoir qu'ils avaient besoin d'une compensation pour les biens qu'ils avaient perdus pendant la révolution, à savoir leurs plantations, leurs grandes maisons, leurs produits et, ce qui n'est pas le moins important, leurs esclaves. En d'autres termes, pendant plus de 100 ans après la révolution, des générations d'Haïtiens ont payé aux Français le droit de s'approprier leur corps. Ils ont tardivement payé leur servitude, payé leur liberté après que leurs camarades soient morts en grand nombre pour l'obtenir.</p><p>Essayez d'imaginer cela non pas à l'échelle nationale, mais à l'échelle individuelle. Vous êtes enchaîné et votre geôlier vous garde, vous nourrit, vous garde à l'abri du toit de la prison, vous oblige à travailler durement pour son profit. Vous lui appartenez. Un jour, vous vous libérez. Tu t'en vas et tu t'installes sur un minuscule terrain de la prison que tu squattes, aux yeux de ton geôlier. Quelque temps plus tard, comme s'il sortait des pages de La Case de l'oncle Tom, votre Simon Legree arrive sur le pas de la porte et vous dit que vous lui devez, disons, 200 000 dollars pour vous être volé à lui.</p><p>Vous êtes outré. À qui appartenez-vous ? Certainement à vous-même. Mais pas du point de vue de votre propriétaire. Il refuse de reconnaître qu'en vous évadant de la prison et en vous installant à votre compte, vous avez remis en cause toute sa culture économique. Il exige que vous vous comportiez selon l'ancien système. D'une main, il brandit une arme avec laquelle il tient toute votre famille en otage jusqu'à ce que vous acceptiez ses conditions. Et vous finissez par le faire, et vous finissez par le payer pour le reste de votre vie tandis que vos enfants et petits-enfants sont affamés et pieds nus. C'est Haïti. C'est la France.</p><p>En raison de ce remboursement de la dette, la France possédait toujours essentiellement Haïti (tout comme les banques américaines et françaises qui ont prêté au Trésor haïtien les fonds nécessaires au paiement) jusqu'en 1947, date à laquelle la dette a finalement été remboursée. Mais ce n'est pas seulement lui : c'est nous, nous tous, qui avons bénéficié de la dette payée par Haïti, et c'est nous encore qui bénéficions de l’exploitation coloniale et raciale du capitalisme global)</p><p>J'en chiale tellement je trouve ces propos insupportables. Ce type ne vaut pas mieux que Trump et consorts.</p>
