Simon Brooke<p>The most depressing discovery to come out of my analysis of Thursday's <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a>? </p><p>If we'd adopted <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ProportionalRepresentation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ProportionalRepresentation</span></a> for the UK at the same time as we did for the <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ScottishParliament" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScottishParliament</span></a> and <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/SeneddCymru" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeneddCymru</span></a>, we'd have had NO <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Conservative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Conservative</span></a> governments this century, no austerity, and no <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Brexit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Brexit</span></a>.</p><p>Blog post here:<br><a href="https://www.journeyman.cc/blog/posts-output/2024-07-06-the-election-and-after/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">journeyman.cc/blog/posts-outpu</span><span class="invisible">t/2024-07-06-the-election-and-after/</span></a></p>
Simon Brooke<p>The second thing is that all these parties will now tack right. <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Labour" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Labour</span></a>'s right wingers are in the ascendant (falsely) claiming a victory -- and will have to contrast themselves against a group of <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Greens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greens</span></a> and independents to their left.</p><p>The less toxic <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Tories" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tories</span></a> have disproportionately lost their seats, leaving more extreme Tories; who will seek to reclaim votes from <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Reform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Reform</span></a>. The <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/LibDems" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LibDems</span></a> will target more ex-Tories. And the <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/SNP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SNP</span></a> will try to win votes back from Labour.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a></p>
Simon Brooke<p>OK, the first thing to say about <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> 2024 is this: <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Labour" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Labour</span></a> lost, and lost badly. They lost, in fact, HALF A MILLION VOTES compared to their 2019 result.</p><p>All the major parties, including the <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/LibDems" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LibDems</span></a>, lost. Labour just lost less badly than either the <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Conservatives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Conservatives</span></a> or the <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/SNP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SNP</span></a>.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a><br><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ScotPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScotPol</span></a></p>

DuncanMSussexPol<p>Been away from telly so guessing it was Reform, then Labour in Ashfield, Zadrozny nowhere in particular?</p><p><a href="https://toot.community/tags/GE2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GE2024</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a></p>
DuncanMSussexPol<p>Oh, 30p Lee's back in, as Reform. So now we get declarations. Of course.</p><p><a href="https://toot.community/tags/GE2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GE2024</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a></p>
DuncanMSussexPol<p>Can we have a few more actual declarations and vote shares here? There's been some interesting seats without coverage on the Beeb.</p><p><a href="https://toot.community/tags/GE2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GE2024</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a></p>
DuncanMSussexPol<p>Missed Harrogate - nice but expected LD gain.</p><p>Barnsley North, had heard Labour worried about Reform here. Easy Labour win, was this a Reform gain on the exit poll?</p><p><a href="https://toot.community/tags/GE2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GE2024</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a></p>
DuncanMSussexPol<p>Cut my nap short, haven't seen what the LD and Con holds - Nuneaton Lab win, you'd expect this, but Stroud is a bit 🤯</p><p><a href="https://toot.community/tags/GE2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GE2024</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a></p>
DuncanMSussexPol<p>We're in the dull phase of the night (Buckland aside) so before a mini-nap, it's been a tough year, just going to say I'm curious about some Scottish seats - on reflection are the SNP doing *that* badly?</p><p>Whispers on the wind say maybe, but let's see.</p><p><a href="https://toot.community/tags/GE2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GE2024</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a></p>
DuncanMSussexPol<p>Wow at Swindon - Buckland gone and not even close, Alexander back.</p><p>With the NE early seats - concerningly high Reform votes. The exit poll has been decently accurate for a long time, but I do hope Reform are below what they project.</p><p><a href="https://toot.community/tags/GE2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GE2024</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/GeneralElectionUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElectionUK</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/UKPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a></p>
