Brad Romance<p>Ok been moving slowly with this but I have a week off work so I have some time to mess with stuff.</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> is working fine, I’ve disabled <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a> contacts and hidden most calendars on my devices (can’t disable it completely yet, due to shared calendars) and I’m only using the Nextcloud versions now.</p><p>Currently setting up Nextcloud’s Mail app so I can access my <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Fastmail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fastmail</span></a> email from there. Fastmail has a decent web UI, but my contacts are in Nextcloud and there’s no live sync for contacts with Fastcloud.</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>OK so I just looked at the system requirements for the Recognize app: 4GB RAM.</p><p>My container has 2GB. 😅</p><p>I could give it more but I'm not sure I care about faces and landmarks tbh. </p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/NextcloudMemories" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NextcloudMemories</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>Hmm, well since I restarted the container the second time it's been fine, but I think there's a scheduled task to scan for faces etc so I'm not confident it's gonna stay up once that kicks in.</p><p>I'll leave it going for now and see what happens.</p><p> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/NextcloudMemories" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NextcloudMemories</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>Well, the Memories UI is nice but yeeeah my poor server is not doing well with the processing load. 😅 I uploaded 600 pics and it maxed out the container’s memory allocation and it stopped responding. Twice. CPU was fine though.</p><p>The web UI is nice enough, it has a timeline view, the map view works well and uses Open Streetmap, it seems to have all the album and tagging features I use. I don’t really use the face and landmark scanning features in iOS Photos but it’s nice on occasion. The web app on iOS is ok (although can’t say how well it would run with my entire library uploaded!).</p><p>I think I’ll disable it for now (since my server can’t cope) and try <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Immich" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Immich</span></a>, see how I like that. If that works better on the hardware I have, I’ll stick with that. If it’s no better I guess I need to get different hardware to run my photo library… or stick with an online solution.</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/NextcloudMemories" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NextcloudMemories</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>Thanks to <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://social.tchncs.de/@lothar" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>lothar</span></a></span> for pointing out the "Memories" app in <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> which seems to be a way better UI for photos, more akin to the Photos app in iOS.</p><p>I just installed it, had to also install and configure other apps eg "Recognize" for face recognition and “Preview Generator”. No big deal but it would be nice if this stuff was bundled. </p><p>There are warnings about the face recognition being resource-hungry. Also need to increase the amount of storage for my NextCloud container. 😅</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>Now my contacts, calendars and notes are in there, I’m tempted to try <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> photos instead of <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Immich" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Immich</span></a>, people seem to like it and it would save me spinning up another container.</p><p>There’s no official Nextcloud photos app, the Nextcloud files app is what handles the background uploads from your camera roll, but for browsing you either get the files interface in that app (yuk) or you use the web UI.</p><p>I might stick a bunch of photos in there (not my whole library) and see how I get on with it. </p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>I really wanted my data stored on my own server, so I tried again on my local Proxmox machine, installed <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> via docker this time and reverse proxy is working, finally! 🥳 </p><p>Also managed to get the data location set to a share on my <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Unraid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Unraid</span></a> box, and I’m logging in seamlessly via <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Authelia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Authelia</span></a>. </p><p>Although I am seeing an error about WebDAV now… 🙄</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>A bonus: I can use the Remotely Save plugin to sync <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Obsidian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Obsidian</span></a> on my iPhone to a folder in NextCloud via WebDAV, and they’re just .md files so the NextCloud Notes app reads them just fine in the browser. There are some Obsidian specific things that don’t work, but they’re totally readable and editable. </p><p>I created a new vault to test, so not much in there, but it seems to work pretty well and it’s way less faff than the SyncThing method I’ve been using with iOS.</p><p><a href="https://github.com/remotely-save/remotely-save" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/remotely-save/remot</span><span class="invisible">ely-save</span></a></p><p> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>I think <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> will work just fine. There’s a LOT of apps/plugins you can install for all kinds of thjngs, I’ve enabled one for grabbing recipes from websites and importing the steps and ingredients without the mandatory opening essay.</p><p>But the important stuff (contacts and calendars) seem to be working as expected. I’ve disabled the iCloud version on my phone and tested adding and deleting stuff, all working as expected.</p><p>Just have to decide if I’m happy keeping it on my paid VPS… I don’t pay for much storage and was hoping to use this for files/documents too. 🤔 I really would rather this was running at home. I’ll have another go with Docker on Proxmox I think. </p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>I’ve been fiddling with <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/NextCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NextCloud</span></a> for the last little while, I’m going to test it as my main account for contacts and calendars for a while before I delete the data from iCloud.</p><p>I installed it on my home server on Proxmox, which I use for a lot of other stuff with no problems, and it works via local IP address but I just couldn’t get it to work with a secure remote connection via Nginx Proxy Manager, which makes it kinda useless.</p><p>I installed it on my Unraid server (which stores my media files) and it works remotely, but that machine is kinda sluggish and I don’t want to be using system resources for this.</p><p>Then <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://home.ajacks.net/users/aj" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>aj</span></a></span> pointed out that Yunohost lets you install Nextcloud, and I already use that for my Mastodon server so it was super easy to set up (once I updated Yunohost). </p><p>Exported my data from iCloud, importing it to Nextcloud now. Contacts worked fine, already signed in via CardDAV, super simple.</p><p>Some of my calendars worked fine, but my primary one is taking forever to import, seems to have stalled… might be too much data, but the file isn’t that big. 🤷🏻‍♂️</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>It genuinely felt like a queer-friendly place to work, half my team was queer, there were queer managers, the fucking CEO is a gay man. There was a big LGBT+ network, they’ve always done the Project Red stuff for AIDS charities, they brought in the pride watchbands and watch faces while I was working there.</p><p>To see them dropping all their principles and acquiescing to the horrendous, harmful, regressive rhetoric coming from the direction of the White House is stomach turning. They should be making a stand. They can fucking afford it. Instead, they’ve rolled over and thrown us under the bus.</p><p>I said it before but Tim Cook personally donating money to Trump feels way worse than Google, Meta etc doing it as companies. I guess it just goes to show being gay doesn’t automatically make you a decent person.</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>Disconnected my domain from iCloud+ and set it up in Fastmail, easy enough except if you use their super-simple device profile to add your Fastmail to your phone, you can't add your email aliases (ie email addresses other than your main one) as "send from” addresses. Had to delete the profile and set it up manually. No big deal, just a hoop I wasn't expecting to have to jump through.</p><p> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Fastmail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fastmail</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/1Password" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>1Password</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>Just setup <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Fastmail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fastmail</span></a> as the next step in de-Appleing my life.</p><p>I use <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/1Password" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>1Password</span></a> which has built in support for Fastmail masked emails (a random email that still gets delivered to my mailbox), so it was an easy choice to make. I signed up for a two-person plan so Rob can use it too if he wants to. </p><p>My domain currently points at iCloud for email, I’ll be moving it to Fastmail at the weekend. I’ll stop using my “me dot com” email and gradually update accounts to use Fastmail or my domain. </p><p> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>I installed <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/NextCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NextCloud</span></a> in a VM in Proxmox, all working great… until I tried to make it use my NAS for primary storage. 😅</p><p>Mounted the NFS share, all seemed ok, so I edited the config so the data directory was the NFS share, restarted the service and got load of permissions errors. Spent ages trying to fix them, fiddling with UID and GID, but I think I just made it worse. 😆</p><p>I’ll start again and try installing a different way so I can hopefully specify the path for the data directory before it’s up and running.</p><p>Might try docker on the NAS and see how slow it is… </p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>For email hosting I was considering <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Proton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Proton</span></a> mail but then I remembered <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/1Password" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>1Password</span></a> can use <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Fastmail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fastmail</span></a> to generate disposable email addresses so maybe that would be a better alternative…</p><p>I _could_ set up my own mail server, that would be way cheaper, but I think I'd rather that was someone else's responsibility. 😆</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>OK so I'm installing <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> which should allow me to store lots of my data on my home server (files, contacts, calendar, it does photos too but I'm gonna try <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Immich" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Immich</span></a> for that) - first hurdle is how to install it. </p><p>I have 3 main options and I can't really decide between them:</p><p>1 - I can install as an “app" (I think it's actually Docker) on my <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Unraid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Unraid</span></a> server. That server is 10 years old, but it's not doing much apart from running Unraid and SABNZBD. It has 16GB memory but not much in the way of processing power... not sure it needs much though?</p><p>2 - I can use a script to install it as an LXC container on my <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Proxmox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Proxmox</span></a> server. This is easy to do but doesn't really let me finetune stuff.</p><p>3 - I can install it as a virtual machine on my Proxmox server. This is more complicated but I gather it's more secure if someone manages to get into my Nextcloud admin user… but I don't know if I need that? </p><p>I'm inclined to keep all my software running in Proxmox and just use Unraid for storage (SAB is an exception cos I wanted it to be running locally, not copying files over the network). I think I’m gonna install via LXC and see how it goes, if I need to I can wipe it and install as a VM instead.</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>I'm lucky. I have a good head-start, I already have a couple of home servers, one running <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Unraid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Unraid</span></a> for storage, and one running <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Proxmox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Proxmox</span></a> for various apps and services.</p><p>I'm using <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Authelia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Authelia</span></a> to protect my stuff (one secure login gives me access to different apps on my server) and apps like <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Nextcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nextcloud</span></a> and <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Immich" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Immich</span></a> support signing in via OpenID Connect (no need to set up a separate account, I just sign in with Authelia and I'm into my account).</p><p>It should all be pretty seamless, once I get it up and running.</p><p><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a></p>
Brad Romance<p>Re the Tim Cook stuff, I'm starting this new thread with a hashtag <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/disapplepointed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disapplepointed</span></a> so you can mute these posts if you're not interested.</p><p>I'm gonna document what I do/find out in case you also want to stop paying <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/Apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Apple</span></a> to store your data. </p><p>Our current monthly bill (not counting Applecare and third party app subscriptions) is €34.95. That's €420 per year.</p><p>That covers <a href="https://toot.chez.gay/tags/iCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iCloud</span></a> storage and seamless syncing for our photos, files, contacts, calendar, notes... it also includes email hosting, and their other paid services for music, video, games and fitness.</p><p>There are alternatives out there. They might not be so convenient, they might need a couple of extra steps or third-party apps, but I'm not padding Tim Cook's pockets any more than I need to.</p><p>I need to keep SOME iCloud storage for backups but we can drop down to a lower-tier plan - the 200GB plan at €2.99 per month, or even the 50GB plan at 99c per month (can't share that plan, so really it would be €1.98).</p><p>€36 per year, worst case scenario. Ideally €24.</p><p>A minimum of €384 per year that Apple won't get from me any more.<br><a href="https://toot.chez.gay/@brad/113767271453218973" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">toot.chez.gay/@brad/1137672714</span><span class="invisible">53218973</span></a></p>
