Dr. Anna Latour<p>Sir Terry Pratchett was one of two people who I quoted directly in my dissertation. This line from Feet of Clay was the motto for my introductory chapter:</p><p>"This is where we’ve filled ourselves up with so many questions that they’re starting to overflow and become answers."</p><p>It resonated with me, because this is what doing research often feels like for me.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/GNUTerryPratchett" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GNUTerryPratchett</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/AcademicChatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AcademicChatter</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/PhDLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PhDLife</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/AcademicMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AcademicMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fiction</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Discworld" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Discworld</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/DiscworldQuote" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DiscworldQuote</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/FeetOfClay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FeetOfClay</span></a></p>

Chu 朱<p>Any social scientists on here? Anyone know of papers discussing how the act of observing people can change the people's behaviours? (that is, just knowing that people are watching changes decisions)</p><p>The scientific equivalent of this would be the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The act of measuring can change the state of the object in question. </p><p>Do social sciences have an equivalent? Tatjana Scheffler<p>A second German citizen (travelling as a tourist) has been arrested at the US border and is being detained for deportation. <br>I definitely won't be travelling to the US any time soon, *especially* for science events. It's too easy to end up causing misunderstandings at the border (Are you there to work? Does the agent think you may want to stay?), and the agents have apparently been instructed to be even more suspicious and "crack down" on cases at will. <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>science</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/academicChatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>academicChatter</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/scienceAtRisk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scienceAtRisk</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/usTravel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>usTravel</span></a> <br>(article in German)<br><a href="https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/usa-einreise-zweiter-deutscher-tourist-in-us-abschiebehaft-150225448276" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">tagesanzeiger.ch/usa-einreise-</span><span class="invisible">zweiter-deutscher-tourist-in-us-abschiebehaft-150225448276</span></a></p>

Dr Pen<p>The UK front pages today. Are any UK universities actually addressing this?
